The Narrow Path

Over the decades, I've been blessed with truly outstanding teachers who have come into my life.  The wisdom and mastery they embodied, the knowledge they imparted, and the skills they recognized within me and helped bring into the light is what I strive to carry today.  Mostly, they helped me remember and embody what was already inside of me, as their teachers did for them.

Kaleolani Spencer

Ed Kaleolani Spencer

My primary mentor for 25+ years has been Ed Kaleolani Spencer.  Ed began his Hawaiian training in 1986 with Nelita Kapaaloha Po'okui Lonokahikini Peleiholani Kūkuiala'akea Anderson, a Kahuna HaHa and Kahuna Lapa'au (kahuna of the ancient healing arts of Hawaii). Nelita taught Kaleolani in the old ways and required one-on-one teaching to ensure his skills.

During a formal inoa (naming) ritual, he was named Kaleolani.  As a Kahu O Mana, Kaleolani is dedicated to the healing arts of ancient Hawaii. Using the knowledge he has been given, he maintains an active private practice and continues to teach the sacred arts of Hawaii Energetics to his advanced and master level students.

Prior to beginning his training in the practices of the Medical Kahuna, Ed had spent over 30 years in the health care field. His traditional medical training provides him with a substantial base upon which to build integrated treatments for the people he cares for. He is trained as a Cranial Sacral Therapist, Gestalt Therapist, and in the Ida RoIf method of structural integration.

He has conducted training programs on various forms of body work, counseling, health care, substance abuse, and self improvement at hospitals, social service agencies and training centers through out the U.S.. Ed has consulted for many hospitals and health care facilities in developing alternative therapy programs in the western medical setting.

Kahu Lanakila Brandt

Kahu Lanakila Brandt

My other beloved primary mentor and makuakane hanai is the late Kahu Lanakila Brandt, a consecrated Kahuna Pule "Temple Priest", of Pu'uhonua O Honaunau's 15th Century heiau (temple), Hale O Keawe and Kahuna La'au Kahea "Master of Spiritual Healing". Kahu Lanakila is an accredited teacher of the Mo'o Lono order who has taught Spiritual Healing and Empowerment Ritual for the past 58 years in Hawai'i.

Chosen at an early age by his great-grandfather, Kehauleo Waiwaiole, Lanakila's bright blue eyes looked into his great-grandfather's deep brown eyes and was told, "You are the one I've been waiting for."  From that point on, Lanakila listened and absorbed the stories, chants, the sacred mysteries, and the ceremonies, all in privacy and not to be talked about with others.

Over the years that followed, he was sent to spend time with many teachers to learn spiritual healing, the mysteries of the priesthood and the hula.  Lanakila became a successful Kumu Hula and with his troupe toured the world.  In the 1970s Lanakila retired from public life to dedicate himself entirely in the work of the Kahuna, his Halau, and the hundreds of requests for counseling and healing that came every year.

Many Branches of Knowledge

Specializations: The Many Branches of Knowledge

As the Hawaiian proverb says, "A‘ohe pau ka ‘ike i ka halau ho‘okahi" or "All Knowledge is Not Learned in One School".  Over the past 25+ years of being a student of these Hawaiian traditions, my mentors facilitated invitations to study with numerous other teachers to master the different facets of Hawaiian culture, healing, and spirituality.  Doors were opened for me to study lomilomi massage and bodywork in several lineage traditions.  I was exposed to La'au Lapa'au, herbal medicines and to hula with other kumu.  And perhaps most importantly, the training in the art of Traditional Ho'oponopono forgiveness and cleansing work as had been practiced in Molokai's Halawa Valley for eons. The teachers and kumu who touched my life will always have my deepest gratitude.

Then there are those amazing souls who have been my family, my loves, my friends, and my students.  They provided the stage for my journey to unfold.  They stood by to guide, to witness, to support, to lend vision and courage, and to celebrate.  In living life their way, and being who each of them are, they too are among my greatest teachers.

Lastly, my teachers have always taught me that nature will always be my most trusted teacher.  To the ancestors, nā akua, nā ‘aumakua, ka ‘aina, ka Lani, nā makani, ka moana, ka ua, ke ao, nā hōkū and all of the messengers, teachers, guardians that guided the ancients and still speak today, mahalo nui.
